Plastic Free is the Way to be

On the 21st of November the Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup (Searica) met with MIO-ECSDE and the informal Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD) at the European Parliament in Brussels. 

This was a unique occasion where Members of the European Parliament and Members of Parliament of non-EU countries came together with marine litter experts, environmental NGOs, journalists and other key stakeholders to explore the next steps in achieving a litter-free Mediterranean Sea. For a long time we have known that plastic in the ocean is a problem; we know the causes of it deleterious effects on the marine environment.
With the Plastic Strategy and its approach to phase out or ban certain plastic products, the EU has set a benchmark against plastic pollution. A lot is  happening already at this crucial moment. We need to leave the plastics behind and rethink the future of plastics towards plastics free oceans and seas.

A second meeting organised by GWP/ Med was held on the 22nd in Brussels   implementing NEXUS programme in MENA ( Middle East and North Africa) countries about Water, Energy, Food and biodiversity. How to avoid that the consumption of one of them may diminish or damage the others. We are aware, in fact, that when we take something out from our planet  we’ll pay in some way, particularly in biodiversity.

Mettiamo al Bando la Plastica

Il 21 Novembre l’Intergruppo Mari, Fiumi, Isole e Aree Costiere (Searica) insieme al MIO-ECSDE (Ufficio Mediterraneo per l’Ambiente) e al COMPSUD  (Circolo informale  dei Parlamentari  Mediterranei per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile ) si sono riuniti al Parlamento Europeo a Bruxelles. E’ stata un’occasione unica in cui parlamentari europei e parlamentari di paesi mediterranei non europei si sono incontrati con esperti di rifiuti marini,  ONG ambientali,  Giornalisti  ed altri soggetti interessati,  per esplorare i passi futuri  per raggiungere l’obiettivo di un Mediterraneo libero dai rifiuti. Da molto tempo sappiamo come  la plastica nell’oceano costituisca  un problema e ne conosciamo gli effetti deleteri sull’ambiente marino.

Con la Direttiva “Strategia per la Plastica” per l’eliminare o  mettere al bando alcuni prodotti in plastica, la Commissione Europea ha posto   un limite all’inquinamento da plastica.  Molto è già stato fatto, ma dobbiamo lasciarci alle spalle  la plastica  e ripensare il futuro con oceani e mari senza plastica.

Un secondo incontro organizzato da GWP/Med (Partenariato Generale sull’Acqua per il Mediterraneo) si è tenuto il 22 a Bruxelles   per l’ attuazione del programma NEXUS nei paesi  MENA    (Medio Oriente e Nord Africa) sull’acqua, l’energia, il cibo e la biodiversità. Come evitare che il consumo eccessivo di una risorsa   danneggi le altre: siamo consapevoli, infatti, che quando prendiamo qualcosa dal pianeta lo paghiamo in qualche modo, particolarmente in biodiversità.
